"Centuries" is probably an overstatement. There was an American family who travelled in Afghanistan by car in the 1960s. They made audio recordings of what they were seeing, and I have heard some of them. Kabul was a relatively modern, forward-looking city, where young women freely wore miniskirts.The recordings were played on National Public Radio.
